Did you know that it’s hail season in Colorado? The team here at Rocky Mountain Dent Services want to remind all our neighbors to keep their eyes peeled and stay safe until we reach the end of the season. Hopefully, we’ll get lucky and the hailstorm we had back in May will be the only major one of 2017.
So, What Is Hail Season?
Every year from April 15 until around September 15, we should all be on the lookout for hailstorms and know the rules for keeping ourselves, our property and our cars safe from these destructive and fits of nature. If you live here, you already know that the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains has even been nicknamed “Hail Alley” because of the frequency and intensity of the storms in this area. It has been called the worst spot in the United States for hailstorms.
During hail season, the entire region can expect to see several intense storms with hail sizes between ½ inch and 1 inch being hurled down. Plus, as many Denver residents already know, the metro and surrounding area are often affected the worst, sometimes seeing large hail over an inch in diameter.
Of course, if you’ve lived here for any length of time, you know that these reports are not exaggerated. The storms are intense and cause a lot of hail damage to cars and more every year. Here in Colorado, we can expect to have 3 or 4 catastrophic level hail storms every year. Catastrophic is defined as causing at least $25 million in insured damages. The one back in May of this year crossed the $1 billion mark all on its own. Ouch!
Insurance companies have been paying out a lot as over the past 10 years as hail storms have racked up billions in damages. To put that number in a more recognizable form, if you spread the cost out over the entire state that translates to $560 per person. Narrow the area to just the Denver metro area where the most damage occurs, and that number doubles to over $1100!
Think about what that means for your insurance premiums.
